Leewood Golf Club: A Century of Community, Tradition and Excellence
For more than a century, Leewood Golf Club has stood as a cornerstone of tradition, community, and enduring excellence. What began as a modest course nestled in the natural beauty of Lower Westchester has grown into a cherished destination where generations of members have played, celebrated, and connected. Each decade brought new challenges, achievements, and defining moments—shaping the club into the vibrant community it is today.
Below, we invite you to explore the rich timeline of Leewood’s evolution, from its founding years in the 1920s through a century marked by resilience, progress, and unforgettable milestones.
1920s — The Beginning
The 1920s marked a formative decade for Leewood Golf Club. Established in 1921, the club began as a modest golf course surrounded by natural beauty. As the decade progressed, its challenging layout and scenic views gained attention, drawing golf enthusiasts from across the region.
1930s — Refinement and Recognition
Throughout the 1930s, Leewood continued to evolve. The course was refined to enhance playability and elevate the overall golf experience. Its reputation as a serene yet demanding destination grew, attracting players seeking both challenge and escape from city life.
1940s — Persevering Through War
During World War II, activity at the club slowed, yet Leewood remained a place of solace for its members. Despite uncertainty and hardship, the club served as a gathering place—offering stability and community when it was needed most.
1950s — Growth and Community
Post‑war optimism fueled a period of expansion in the 1950s. Improvements to the clubhouse and facilities transformed Leewood into not just a golf club, but a social hub. Lively events and a warm, close‑knit community became central to the club’s identity.
1960s — Challenges and Unity
The 1960s brought both controversy and strength as local political debates placed the club’s future in question. Through it all, the membership remained steadfast. Their commitment during this contentious period forged an even stronger sense of unity and purpose.
1970s — Adversity and Endurance
In the 1970s, Leewood faced significant hardships—including a fire that destroyed the caddy house and the loss of a valued employee. Despite these tragedies, the club’s spirit endured, continuing to offer recreation, connection, and camaraderie.
1980s — Renovation and Revival
The 1980s ushered in an era of rejuvenation. Major renovations, including the addition of The Terrace Room, revitalized the clubhouse and elevated Leewood’s stature as a premier destination for dining, events, and social gatherings.
1990s — Financial Resilience
Rising real estate taxes created financial strain in the 1990s. Through proactive action—including legal efforts to reduce tax burdens—Leewood secured long‑term stability. The membership demonstrated remarkable determination during this challenging time.
2000s — Modernization and Member Support
The 2000s brought significant upgrades, including a rebuilt men’s locker room and a renovated Men’s Grill. Even amid the economic recession, the club persevered as members rallied together to support and sustain their community.
2010s — Enhancing the Experience
The 2010s signaled renewed investment in both the course and clubhouse. These major improvements elevated the playing experience while honoring the club’s traditions. Leewood balanced modernization with heritage, setting the stage for continued success.
2020s — Strength Through Uncertainty
The 2020s began with the unprecedented challenges of the COVID‑19 pandemic. Temporary closures and safety measures tested the club’s operations and resilience. Yet golf—one of the safest outdoor activities—thrived, helping sustain the club’s vibrant sense of community. In 2022, Leewood proudly celebrated its Centennial Year, honoring 100 years of tradition with a series of special events for members and the community.
